While Paul and Barnabas returned from their first missionary journey, they found the church at Jerusalem was being divided. Certain believers were saying that new converts had to follow the laws of Moses as well as believing in Christ. A council of the early church discussed the difference between Jewish and Gentile believers in Jesus Christ. It decreed that the Word teaches Gentiles aren't under the law, but they shouldn't use their freedom to cause others to stumble. The grace of God should cause His followers to be gracious.
